Student Laptop Program
Articles
Overview
Students enrolled in the Laptop Program will receive a laptop computer from ITS for academic and personal use. They are powerful devices designed to run all campus scientific and engineering software as well as store notes and documents.
The Student Laptop Program is mandatory for all undergraduate students taking six or more credits and who have South Dakota Mines as their home university. Student laptop computers are leased for four years. After the lease period, you will be assigned a new computer for your remaining time at South Dakota Mines.
Semester fees are set by the South Dakota Board of Regents and are calculated into student tuition.
History
Piloted in 2006, the South Dakota Mines Student Laptop Program has evolved from 25 pilot users to its current all-student format serving more than 2,000 students. The evolution of the program has heavily depended on student and faculty feedback and many
student-suggested solutions have been implemented into the program. The program’s success has expanded the diversity of teaching methods both inside and outside the classroom by offering students greater active learning opportunities.
