1885

(June 10)  William P. Blake donates 41 scientific and technical books to form the beginning of the School of Mines Library.

(June 12) Gilbert Bailey loans his collection of fossils and minerals, providing the foundation for the Museum of Geology.

(August 19)  Cornerstone of the first School of Mines building dedicated.

(February 21)  First day of classes at Dakota School of Mines.


1888

— Metallurgy Building completed at School of Mines.

(May 31) First commencement, John W. Hancher receives first bachelor of science degree.
1888 Hancher-graduate


1889

— South Dakota admitted to Union as 40th state.
