— (September 18, 2012) President Robert Wharton passes away after a long battle with cancer. Memorial ceremony held that week at the campus arch.
— (April) Heather Ann Wilson, DPhil, selected to be the eighteenth president of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
— South Dakota School of Mines & Technology accepted for membership into the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), Division II.
— Dr. James Feiszli, Director of Music at SD Mines, named the 2013 U.S. Professor of the Year for the state of South Dakota by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)
— (February) South Dakota School of Mines & Technology accepted as a full member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
— (May ) Construction begins for new student Wellness and Recreation Center.
— (May) Joel Lueken named new Athletics Director. Lueken was formerly Associate Athletic Director for William Jewell College in Missouri.
— (August) Jan Puszynski, PhD, appointed Vice President for Research. Puszynski joined SD Mines in 1991 as a faculty member.
— (November) New loop road offers additional access and parking at the SD School of Mines.
