Petroleum and Other Energy Resources

GGE faculty are engaged in research pertaining to exploration and production of energy resources including petroleum, natural gas, and geothermal resources. Research activities also have included management of water resources associated with the production of hydrocarbons and investigations of rock properties that affect hydraulic fracturing performance and results.

  • Hydrocarbon resource evaluations
    -- 3D subsurface structural and isochore mapping (Niobrara, Three Forks, and Tyler formations) with industry standard software such as Petrel and Arc-GIS
    -- Well log correlations with Petrel and Techlog
    -- Resistivity, porosity, structural, and facies mapping with Petrel and GIS
    -- Regional investigations for new sources and techniques to produce hydrocarbons and
    geothermal energy; includes evaluation of abundant organic-rich shales in South Dakota and adjacent areas

    -- Lithologic controls on stress-strain and creep
    -- Petrophysical and geomechanical characterization
    -- Numerical simulations of fluid-solid coupling
