Scholarships

A number of scholarships are available to undergraduates pursuing a Geology & Geological Engineering degree. Recently, a prestigious new scholarship was announced, the Alvis Lisenbee Scholarship, and we encourage students to apply.

Alvis Lisenbee Scholarship ($10,000)

imgLisenbeeScholarshipEach year, the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at South Dakota Mines selects two recipients for the Alvis Lisenbee Scholarship. The scholarship is roughly $10,000 annually and has the option to be renewed for a second year if the GGE scholarship committee deems it appropriate. In order to apply, students must have completed a minimum of 60 credits (Junior or Senior Status) by the beginning of the Fall semester of the academic year of the award, must be majoring in Geology or Geological Engineering, and must have demonstrated a history of exemplary student conduct including academic achievement and promise, involvement in departmental/student activities, and exhibit irreproachable moral character plus a thirst for knowledge that is in keeping with the principles that guided Dr. Lisenbee’s career and service at South Dakota Mines. In order to apply, students must:

  • Complete the scholarship application (distributed to students in the February prior to the academic year of the award).
  • Prepare a short statement of qualification. This statement shall be no more than 1000 words and must detail the applicant’s qualifications (keeping in mind the qualities stated above) and document how this scholarship would impact the applicant’s academic career.

(If applying for renewal for a second year, all application materials must be completed again and re-submitted.)
