NASA Presentation by Tom Durkin
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m., Surbeck Center Ballroom

The Expanding Universe:  Throughout history, we have repeatedly underestimated the size of the universe.  This talk will focus on the current understanding of Hubble’s Law and the Hubble constant, which measures the expansion rate of the universe where velocity increases with increasing distance from the observer.  It appears that dark energy causes space to “stretch.”  This interesting, recent discovery results in galaxies that are beyond a certain distance from Earth to move away from us faster than the speed of light, making much of the universe forever beyond our observation.  The talk discusses how this is possible in light of Einstein’s theories of Special and General Relativity.

Museum of Geology Hours
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., O'Harra Building

Keep in mind that tour groups will need to be 15-20 students, so plan for chaperones accordingly. Visiting schools are more than welcome to bring a sack lunch to eat during the Music in Engineering show. You may also make arrangements to purchase lunch from Dining Services by calling (605) 394-2483.
