Are you ready to dig into geology?!
Students in this hands-on career camp will experience all of the geology the Black Hills area has to offer. From the ancient rock layers of the Black Hills, to the crystals and natural formations of area caverns and the fossils in the Badlands, Geology Rocks is a one-of-a-kind camp only available at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Get prepared to sleep under the stars and camp your way through the Black Hills as you make friends and learn about geology, and geological engineering!
Some of the topics students will learn through experiences or hands-on learning are as follows:
- Minerals, rocks and fossils
- Basic geology
- Oil and gas exploration and production
- Topographic maps
- Geologic maps
- Water, landslides, and earthquakes
- Volcanoes and magmas
- Geology of the Black Hills
- The creation of mountains and landforms
Geology Rocks! is sponsored by Continental Resources. This camp includes a visit and discussion from a geologist who works at Continental Resources.
Geology Rocks! Youth Field Camp in the Black Hills gives students a chance to experience college life in an outdoor setting. Camps will be designed and taught by full-time engineering and science faculty members, and senior-level students and graduate students live and work with camp participants.
A majority of this camp will be spent in the field, with students camping at night while surrounded by the diverse and unique geology the Black Hills has to offer.
Geology Rocks! Youth Field Camp in the Black Hills is a taste of what a geology-focused career will be like! Students will have the opportunity to hear from School of Mines alumni and current faculty members who will discuss science and engineering careers with the students, as well as help them complete projects and take them on off-campus site tours related to potential career fields.
