Adventure Weekend

Organized by the Student Activities & Leadership Center, Adventure Weekend is open to all new, incoming students. Adventure Weekend is an opportunity for new students to meet one another, experience the Rapid City region, and form connections with returning students, faculty and staff. 

Space is limited for each Adventure, sign-up today! Please Note: Each student may sign-up for only one adventure. Once registration and payment is received your spot is reserved; no refunds will be issued. While we will make every attempt to keep to the activities and timelines listed, changes to the schedules may occur. All changes will be communicated to the registered students.

  • STEMinist Adventure Retreat: All new women students are highly encouraged to attend this adventure-packed weekend with Women in Science and Engineering. We’ll escape to the cabins at Cedar Canyon Camp in Rapid City and go kayaking, climbing, play black-light volleyball, make s’mores around the camp fire, and if you’re really brave, zoom down a waterslide in the woods in the dark. We’ll also connect with upper class women mentors, and get advice from successful women in industry to jumpstart you college career. Sorry guys, this weekend is for STEMinists only. Friday, August 26 3:30 p.m. – Saturday, August 27, 3 p.m. Cost: $40 plus tax (open to all first year women).

  •  Stars and Rockets: South Dakota is the perfect place to see the moon and stars at their best and brightest! Come join the SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) chapter to launch model rockets high in the sky and then travel to an observatory to view various celestial bodies. You won't want to miss this evening's spectacular views! Fri. Aug. 26 (6pm-10pm). Cost: $10.00 plus tax (limited to 22 participants)
  •  Rock Climbing at South Seas:  Sponsored by the Hardrocker Climbing Club, this day-long adventure will give students an opportunity to learn the basics of rock climbing at South Seas near Mt. Rushmore.  We will climb a variety of short routes of varying difficulty, matched to the abilities of the students.  We will finish the day with a barbecue near the climbing area. All necessary equipment provided. Largest shoe size is 13. Sat. Aug. 27 (9am - approx. 4pm). Cost: $25.00 plus tax (limited to 10 participants)

  • Geology Hike and Agate Hunting Adventure: The “Geology Hike and Agate Hunting Adventure” will provide students with an opportunity to observe and learn about the rich geologic history of the Black Hills region.  In the morning we will take a hike through a canyon that provides an excellent opportunity to observe some Black Hills geology first-hand.  In the afternoon we will hunt for agates in one of the well-known agate localities in the plains just east of the Black Hills.  Students will also have an opportunity to interact with current undergraduate students and faculty from the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering. Sat. Aug. 27, (9am-5pm). Cost: $30.00 plus tax (limited to 17 participants)

  • Laser Tag and Go Karts with Student Senate: Enjoy a day of laser tag and go karting with the Student Senate. Afterwards, picnicking and a movie will finish the day. This weekend sends you to a few of School of Mines’ favorite places and activities around Rapid City. During the event, ask student senators about what it means to represent students to the university, community, and state government. Sat. Aug 27 (11am-5pm). Cost: $25.00 plus tax (Limited to 11 participants)
  • SDSM&T Adventure Weekend: Sponsored by the Military Science Department, students will enjoy the great outdoors, learn team building skills, and meet their peers during this Geocaching/Orienteering and problem solving Adventure that will require leadership, teamwork and analytical skills. This adventure is moderately strenuous and requires participants to bring water and to wear good shoes. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams. Sat. Aug. 27 (8am-5pm). Cost: $10.00 plus tax (limited to 40 participants)

  • Nuclear Nerdvana: You never forget your first Nuclear Missile! Join the Physics Department in a visit to the South Dakota Air & Space Museum and enter one of the few remaining training bunkers used by the U.S. Air-force, which houses a Minuteman Nuclear Missile. Learn how Ellsworth Air Force Base aided in the defense of our country during the cold war era. Sun. Aug. 28 (9am-12pm). Cost: $10.00 plus tax (limited to 10 participants)

  •  Digging into the Past: Sponsored by Paleontology Club, will take you on an adventure into the paleontology of the state. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to go out into the field and prospect for fossils, camp, and hike while learning more about the local area’s past. August 26th (5pm to 8pm), August 27th (9am to 8pm) and August 28th (9am to 5pm). Cost $55.00 plus tax (limited to 15 participants)

  • Soak Up Local Culture and History: Sponsored by HAP’N. Take of walking tour of downtown Rapid City, with a special focus on the local art and historic sites. We'll visit the Dahl Art Museum, the Historic Elks theater and Hotel Alex Johnson, Memorial Park and its Berlin Wall exhibit, the Journey Museum of Black Hills History, as well as showing examples of local artists work. We'll also be stopping for lunch at Hippo Steve's Pastiche for the best soup and sandwiches in Rapid City. Sat. Aug. 27th 11am-5pm. Limit of 15 participants. Cost: $25.00 plus tax

  • Materials Minicamp: Sponsored by the Metallurgy and Materials Science Department, Materials Minicamp is a whole-day adventure in the realm of metallurgy and materials! Students will have the opportunity to experience blacksmithing, metal casting, materials testing, and optical/electron microscopy. In addition, students will be given a tour of the cutting edge Advanced Materials Processing and Joining Laboratory on campus, which includes the chance to see the research equipment in action. Sat. Aug. 27 (8:30am - 6pm). Cost: $0 (limited to 40 participants)

  • Serving and Exploring the Black Hills: Intervarsity Christian Fellowship along with 2 SDSMT faculty would like to invite you to spend the weekend serving and exploring in the Black Hills.  We will gather at 9am on Saturday, August 29 in upper Surbeck for the community service component.  Past projects have included clearing fallen trees, weed whacking and painting.  We will spend Saturday morning doing community service.  In the afternoon we will travel to a Dutchman campground where we will camp, fish and hike in the Black Hills thru Sunday morning.  You will need some sturdy shoes for work and hiking and long pants for the work on Saturday.  You will also need a sleeping bag, pillow and other personal items.  Tents, food and fishing equipment will be provided.  We will return by 2pm on Sunday. 9am Sat. Aug. 27 to Sun. Aug. 28 Cost: $45.00 plus tax (limited to 30 participants)

  • Camping & Hiking at Sylvan Lake: This is an overnight camping trip at Sylvan Lake Campground in beautiful Custer State Park. During the overnight retreat, you will experience the best of the Black Hills: hiking Harney Peak. Don’t miss out on an adventure set in the heart of the Black Hills while getting to know some of your peers. Camping equipment is available, if you cannot provide your own. Sat. Aug. 27 (10am) through Sun. Aug. 28 (5pm). Cost: $30.00 plus tax (limited to 20 participants)
