Kirk Allison is in his third season as the head coach of the
Hardrocker golf program. He is no stranger to SD Mines. He played
football for the Hardrockers from 1974-79 as a defensive back and then
was an assistant football coach under Gary Boner from 1981-89 coaching
the offensive backfield.
This will be Allison's first stint as a golf coach at any level --- but that doesn't mean he isn't familiar with the game.
"I didn't start playing golf until I was 26 years old. Actually, Gary
Boner is the one that got me started," Allison said. "I have worked at
it over the years to the point where I'm a pretty decent player. I'm a
two handicap and I like to compete in state events as well as
tournaments around the area."
Golf takes up a lot of Allison's time as he works part time at The
Elks Golf Course and Hart Ranch in Rapid City where he has been
soliciting advice from pros and past golf coaches. He feels confident he
can pass on his knowledge to his players and looks forward to the
challenges this coming fall.
One of the philosophies that Allison hopes to institute to his
players is the importance of mental toughness to balance the physical
aspect of the game.
