Lady 'Rockers finish 8th at Mesa Golf Invite

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women’s golf team finished in eighth place after the second day of competition during the 36-hole Colorado Mesa Maverick Spring Invitational at the Golf Club at Redlands in Grand Junction, Colo.

After some uncharacteristic high scores on the first day, the Lady Hardrocker squad shaved off 48 strokes during the second round of action. SD Mines ended with a two-day team total of 774 (411-363). The host school won the tournament with a team tally of 649, Metro State (Colo.) was second with 672 and Regis University (Colo.) tied with Colorado Christian University for third place each posting scores of 682.

Individually, Metro’s Nathalie Gallacher earned top spot with the low two-day score of 146, while Sara Swaney of Colorado Mesa was second with 155 strokes and Colorado Christian’s Katrina Mendez was one stroke back in third with 156.

SD Mines freshman Cassidy Vollmer had the low round for her team with a 175 (91-84) for 16th place, sophomore Shelby Allen took 31st posting a 192 (101-91), sophomore Brigit Kelly took 37th place after carding a 200 (103-97) and freshman Sydney James rounded out the tourney with a 207 (116-91) for 39th. Sophomore Erin Rasmussen also competed at the invitational. She didn’t turn a score in on Monday, but came on Tuesday to card a 104.

The Hardrockers have just one event remaining on their 2014 schedule. SD Mines is slated to compete in Sioux Falls, S.D., April 12-13 at the Augustana Spring Invitational.

Day 1 Story

The South Dakota School of Mines women’s golf team is sitting in eighth place after the first day of competition Monday during the Colorado Mesa Maverick Spring Invitational at the Golf Club at Redlands in Grand Junction, Colo.


 The Lady Hardrockers put up a team score of 411 strokes after 18 holes of play. The host school Lady Mavericks hold the Day 1 advantage with a 327 strokes while Metro State (Colo.) is a distant second with 343 and Colorado Christian is third with 347 strokes.

Individually, Metro’s Nathalie Gallacher leads the tournament after carding a 73 and Sara Swaney of Colorado Mesa is five strokes back in second place with a 78.

Freshman Cassidy Vollmer leads the way for SD Mines with a share of 19th place after posting a 91 (48-43). Sophomore Shelby Anderson has a 101 and is tied for 36th place, sophomore Brigit Kelly put up a 103 and is tied for 38th place and freshman Sydney James holds 41st place with a 116.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with an 18 hole round.
