Lady 'Rockers add four to hoops roster

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- With one full season under his belt, South Dakota School of Mines women’s basketball head coach Ryan Larsen begins to solidify the Lady Hardrocker roster for the 2014-15 season with a stellar recruiting class.

Larsen is pleased to announce the newest student-athletes: Alicia Faye Gallagher, Stacy Hull, Kahlie Peterson and Payton Humpal to the Lady Hardrocker program.

“I am very excited about this 2014 recruiting class. Each of these young ladies are great fits for South Dakota School of Mines academically and athletically as well as being high-character individuals,” Larsen said. “All of these student-athletes come from great programs and have been really well coached. They will be outstanding additions to Hardrocker Women’s Basketball and we can’t wait to coach them.”

 Kahlie Peterson

 Kahlie Peterson --- 5-foot-10-inch Forward --- Sturgis, S.D.

Peterson is a local talented multi-sport athlete from Sturgis excelling in basketball, volleyball, track & field and softball. As a Lady Scooper hoops player, Peterson averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds during her senior season and helped her team to a fourth-place finish at the South Dakota Class AA State Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

Peterson was named to the All-State Second Team, earned All-Conference honors in 2013 and 2014, was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection in 2012-2011, earned Athlete of the Week honors several times throughout her high school career from local media, scored over 1,100 points as a Scooper, was a team captain and a four-year starter.

“We are incredibly excited to have a local talent such at Kahlie join the Hardrockers,” Larsen said. “Kahlie can play all three guard positions, is an extremely well rounded student-athlete and her basketball IQ is special.”

While at SD Mines, Peterson plans to major in Interdisciplinary Sciences.

Stacie Hull --- 5-foot-11-inch Forward --- Broomfield, Colo.

Hull is a skillful player who was a great asset to the Broomfield High School Eagles who averaged 8.3 points, 1.6 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game as a senior and her team that finished with a 27-1 overall record. Hull was an All-Conference selection three years in a row and a four-time Academic All-State selection. Hull was a member of the Colorado Class 4A State championship team in 2011, state runners-up in 2014, made an appearance in the Final Four in 2013 and the Elite Eight in 2012.

“Stacie is a big piece to this recruiting class. She brings depth to our post rotation with the skills that we recruit to,” Larsen said. “Stacie can score from multiple areas on the floor and her defense and rebounding are already at a collegiate level.”

Hull, who is the sister of graduating post player Renae Waters, want to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering during her time as SD Mines.

 Payten Humpal

  Payton Humpal --- 5-foot-10-inch Forward --- Fort Collins, Colo.

Humpal was a three-year varsity starter for the Fort Collins High School Lady Lambkins. As a senior, she averaged 16.2 points and 3.4 steals per game. Humpal assisted her high school team make an appearance in the second round of the Colorado High School Girls Playoffs as a senior and made it to the Sweet 16 (sophomore and junior seasons) as well as a trip to the Final Four as a freshman.

Humpal is a four-year Academic All-American selection, earned All-Conference Honorable Mention as a sophomore, was an All-Conference First Team selection and received All-State First Team honors.

“Payton is a tremendous addition to the Hardrocker women’s basketball program,” Larsen said. “Payton is a versatile player and hard-nosed competitor. Her athleticism and scoring ability from the perimeter are the strengths of her game and will be a real asset for us.”

 ALicia Faye Gallahger

Alicia Faye Gallagher --- 5-foot-11-inch Guard --- Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England

Originally from England, Gallagher comes to SD Mines as a junior college transfer from Lamar Community College in Colorado. Competing across the pond, Gallagher spent two years playing on the U16 England Training Squad and one year on the U18 Squad. She represented the East of England Squad two years in a row and won the U17 National Three-Point Shooting Competition.

Gallagher also went to the Final Fours with the Eastside Eagles in 2012, made an appearance at the Barking Abbey Div. I Nationals in 2012 and 2013, earned the Barking Abbey Coaches’ Player of the Year Award in 2013 and was a member of the U19 Barking Abbey Premier League Championship team in 2012 and 2013.

“Alicia’s shooting ability was a major priority for this recruiting class,” Larsen said. “Alicia has competed at a very high level of basketball for a long time and those experiences will have her ready to contribute immediately.”
