XC teams compete at South Central Regionals

 CANYON, Texas --- The South Dakota School of Mines men’s and women’s cross country team made the long trek to Canyon, Texas, for the NCAA Div. II South Central Regional Championships this past weekend. It was the biggest race of the season for the Hardrockers as there were over 20 teams in the field in both the men’s 10-kilometer and women’s 6-kilometer runs.

The SD Mines men finished 20th in the team standings with 526 points. Adams State (Colo.) earned top honors with 31 points as the Grizzlies had runners finish 2,3,4,9 and 13th. Western State (Colo.) was second with 38 points, Colorado Mines grabbed third (89) and Metro State (Colo.) tied with West Texas A&M for fourth with 171.

Individually, Western State’s Vergard Olstad won the individual title with the winning time of 29 minutes and 57 second and Adams State’s Jovanny Godinez was second clocking a 30:18.

SD Mines top runner, junior Tyler Nack, posted a time of 33:01 for 67th place while freshman Kevin Noto took 102 in a time of 34:17. As for the rest of the Hardrockers, freshman Justin Slattery was 112th (43:43), freshman Dave Mathieu took 121 (35:17), freshman Grant Cameron finished 124th (35:38), freshman Sam Patzer came in 126 (35:45) and freshman Ryan Wright crossed the finish line in 138th (36:24).

The Lady Hardrockers posted 674 points in the team rankings to take 22nd place. Adams State captured top honors with 28 points as members of the Lady Grizzlies finished 1,2,3,9 and 13th. Western State was the runner-up with 62 points, West Texas A&M took third posting 119 points and Metro State grabbed fourth with 129 points.

Lauren Martin of Adams State was the individual champion clocking a time of 21:14 and teammate Kelly Lamb was just a little ways back in second with a time of 21:27.

Junior Brittanee Wood had the best finish for the Lady ‘Rockers, taking 116th in a time of 24:44 and freshman Maggie Vinton earned 136th place in a time of 25:34 and freshman Kassidy Knutson was a spot back in 137th with a time of 25:35. As for the rest of the SD Mines women’s squad, freshman Shanae LaCroix came in 147th (26:56), freshman Therese Freles was right behind in 148th (27:01) and sophomore Emily Stickney was 149th (27:32).
