Dr. Duke's research has included work on granites and pegmatites, carbon migration and graphite deposits, geochemistry of metamorphic rocks, and mineral reactions in concrete. His recent research focuses on applications of field-based infrared spectroscopy and remote sensing to characterize processes in metamorphic rocks. He has been Principal Investigator or Project Director on roughly $15 million in grants and contracts. Much this funding is related to statewide NASA Space Grant and NASA EPSCoR activities, but it also includes competitive research and equipment awards from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, NASA, American Chemical Society–Petroleum Research Fund, mining companies, South Dakota Department of Transportation, South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development, and EROS Data Center.
Dr. Duke joined South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1984 as a Research Scientist in the Institute for the Study of Mineral Deposits. He holds a B.S. degree from Beloit College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Dartmouth College. Currently he is Professor of Geology at SDSM&T and serves as Director of the Engineering and Mining Experiment Station and Director of the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium and South Dakota NASA EPSCoR Program (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research).
Dr. Duke teaches courses in Mineralogy and Crystallography, Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, and Scanning Electron Microscopy.
