Title:
Australian professor to discuss creativity, engineering and crime
Description:

David Cropley, PhD, an international expert in engineering creativity, will present the lecture “Malevolent Creativity – The Dark Side of Divergence” at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in the Classroom Building, room 204 east.

Sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter, the presentation will discuss the evolution of the modern creativity era and some of the core concepts that underpin creativity research in psychology. Cropley will explore creativity in relation to engineering and design, discuss the way in which creativity is recognized in products and draw these concepts together to explore the application of creativity to darker purposes such as crime and terrorism.

Cropley is the deputy director of the Defence and Systems Institute and associate professor of Engineering Innovation at the University of South Australia. He has taught a variety of courses on engineering, creativity and innovation and has facilitated creative problem-solving workshops for various organizations.

He is co-author of Creativity and Crime: A Psychological Analysis and Fostering Creativity: A Diagnostic Approach for Higher Education and Organisations and is co-editor of The Dark Side of Creativity.
