If you have
any concerns or questions about the Tech Learning Center (TLC)
please call or email Academic and Enrollment Services by
contacting: Linn Miller (605) 394-2428, Linn.Miller@sdsmt.edu
Or, you may contact Dr. Pat Beu (605) 394-2400, Pat.Beu@sdsmt.edu If you would like an electronic version (MS Word
format) of the tutoring schedule and tutors' qualifications chart,
please contact Linn Miller.
The TLC is located on the lower level of the Devereaux
Library, room 110 -- next to the elevator.
Please note: the TLC is closed during holidays, semester breaks, and
any day that classes have been canceled due to inclement weather, or
during times that the Devereaux Library is closed.
The tutoring schedule varies each semester according to the tutors'
available time. Free tutoring is continued during summer school but
at reduced hours and staff.
Scroll down for the TLC's Spring Tutoring Schedule.
Please note: this schedule may change from time to time throughout
the
semester and the schedule will change at the beginning of the
new semester. Tutors make their own schedule according to the time
they have available in their personal schedules.
ALL TUTORS
DO NOT TUTOR ALL SUBJECTS. Each tutor has his or her
specialties which are listed on the Tutors'
Specialties/Qualifications chart. Student users may expect tutors to
tutor the subjects that are marked under their names on this chart.
To find a tutor with whom you have rapport, visit the TLC several
times during the day or week (one visit may not be
enough).
To most effectively use the TLC
please come prepared by:
Having
attempted the homework (including required readings)
Bringing
textbooks, assignments, notes, and calculators
Understanding
that when the TLC is busy, tutors will need to divide their time
between students needing help (please work on other problems until
the tutor is free to work with you).
Understanding that last minute projects will not be the tutors'
responsibility. (Often, if students leave their assignment and/or
test prep until the last minute, tutoring will not help.)
Understanding that tutors help students with problem solving
processes but they do not do homework and do not teach the course.

The TLC's main focus is helping students
understand coursework in the School of Mines core subjects--math, chemistry,
computer science, physics, and English--in the 100 and 200 level.
Some (but not all) tutors may be qualified to tutor upper level
courses in their area of expertise. |
| Most TLC tutors are peer (student) tutors--sophomore, junior, senior, and graduate
students who have excelled in the courses they tutor and know the
expectations of the School of Mines professors. Their responsibility is to
help and to guide students in understanding the coursework that they
(the tutors) are qualified to tutor, but they do not do students'
homework for them or teach the class.
Student users
are responsible for their own academic success, and are encouraged
to use all resources available to them at the School of Mines (i.e.
the School of Mines professors, advisors, peer advisors, departments, Counseling and ADA
Services, study groups, the TLC etc.) If student users are not
School of Mines students they are encouraged to first seek out the
resources available to them through their institution (i.e. the
professor, advisor, department, counseling services and ADA services, tutoring
services). Please understand, TLC tutors are familiar with School of
Mines courses but might not be familiar with your
institution's instructors' expectations for the course.
