Executive Summary of Significant Accomplishments

Teaching

Ø      Developing and teaching 3-course sequence in Geographic Information Systems.

Ø      Writing a GIS lab textbook for use in the introductory GIS course.  This text is under contract for publication by McGraw-Hill in October 2003.

Ø      Teaching department courses in geology and advising student research.

Ø      Writing a Guidebook for Senior Research and improving course procedures.

Research

Ø      Participating in the planning and development the C-lock system to estimate and validate carbon sequestration of agricultural lands.  The C-lock project is a major initiative funded by Governor Janklow, beginning its third year.

Ø      Investigating remote sensing techniques for operational use in developing and maintaining inventories of forest resources, a 3-year NASA funded project.

Ø      Establishing a NASA Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing at SDSM&T.

Ø      Working with Badlands National park on the GIS component of projects for controlling thistles, analyzing park development, and fossil mapping.

Ø      Collaborating with the Rocky Mountain Research Station on projects relating to elk habitat in the Black Hills and remote sensing for forest inventory.

Ø      Serving as technical advisor and consultant on GIS for the Black Hills National Forest.

Ø      Fusing optical remote sensing data (Landsat) with radar for lithologic mapping at the EROS Data Center as a SD Space Grant Faculty Fellow.
