Museum of Geology, SDSM&T
Paleontology Master's Degree Program
The Master of Science in Paleontology program
at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is an integral part
of the academic mission of the Museum of Geology. This program is unique
and is designed to take advantage of the very special circumstances inherent
in the location of the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering
and the Museum of Geology in one of the richest areas for fossil vertebrates
in North America. The degree program was approved in 1962 and the
first degrees granted in 1964. This program is administered within
the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering. Other degrees granted
in this department are Master's of Geology,
Master's of Geological Engineering,
Ph.D. in Geology and Ph.D.
in Geological Engineering. Financial support for students in
this program is derived from two sources: the Department of Geology and
the Museum of Geology.
The emphasis for this program is to prepare students for advance study
and/or employment in a museum environment. It ensures a broad-based background
that allows students a variety of options upon graduation. Students in
the program make extensive use of the vertebrate collection located in
the Museum of Geology. Students have an excellent opportunity
to participate in data acquisition and gain hands-on experience with the
museum environment.
