Tech Freethought Society


Article I

Name

The name of this organization at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (hereinafter called SDSM&T) shall be Tech Freethought Society (hereinafer called TFS). This name and constitution shall superceed the SDSM&T Campus Atheists and Agnostics.

Article II

Purpose

The purpose of TFS shall be to serve as a forum for freethinkers, atheists, skeptics, agnostics, etc., to have interactive discussions, share ideas, and socialize; to clarify the aforementioned ideologies for others, when necessary; and to defend TFS by engaging in debate whenever our motives or rationale are questioned. TFS is hereby specifically not intended to serve as a tool to proselytize.

Article III

Membership

Section 1: Voting Members.

A voting member is any SDSM&T student who supports the purpose of TFS, has paid dues, and has registered his or her membership with an appropriate officer. Only voting members shall vote or hold office other than Faculty Advisor.

Section 2: Associate Members.

An associate member is any faculty member, staff, alumnus, or community member who supports the purpose of TFS and has registered his or her membership with the secretary or other appropriate officer.

Section 3: Dues.

Dues shall be determined by the voting membership and added to the by-laws.

Section 4: Membership Termination.

A voting membership is terminated when the member notifies the secretary that he or she is no longer a member, dues are more than 60 days in arrears, or the member has been expelled by a 2/3 vote.

Article IV

Officers

Section 1: Officers

Three individuals will be selected as officers. Officers do not have official titles, but officers may select a title for themselves if they wish.

Section 2: Officer Responsibilites

Officers are selected primarily for the purpose of filing official group registration with the SDSM&T Student Senate. Other Officer responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a liason between the organization and the university.
  • Collecting mail sent to the organization.
  • Maintaining the organization webpage and listserv.

Section 2: Officer Selection and Vacancies.

Officers shall be selected at the first meeting of each school year and shall serve a term of one year, commencing upon their election. Officers shall be selected by pulling names of willing volunteers out of a hat. Webpage maintenance may be delegated to a willing and capable volunteer. Vacancies shall be filled by a special selection at the next regular meeting following the vacancy.

Article V

Meetings

Section 1: Regular Meetings.

Regular meetings shall be held every Thursday during the school year.

Section 2: Special Meetings.

Special meetings for any purpose may be called by an Officer or by petition of the 1/3 of the membership. The listserv maintainer shall notify all members of Special meetings.

Section 3: Summer Meetings.

Summer meetings may be held at the discretion of the members present during summer. This constitution may not be modified, nor may by-laws be added or removed, at summer meetings.

Section 4: Quorums.

A Quorum for a regular meeting shall be any three members, provided at least one is an Officer. A quorum for a special meeting shall be 1/3 of the membership.

Article VI

Amendments and By-Laws

Section 1: Amendments.

This constitution may be amended by a 2/3 majority vote at any regular meeting or over the organization's listserv.

Section 2: By-Laws.

By-Laws may be modified, added to, or removed from this constitution by a 2/3 majority vote at any regular meeting or over the listserv.
