Poetry by Daniel Green

Miracles

The concept of creation exalts imagination
breathes purpose and design into all
that went before, contrives an explanation
whose proof depends entirely on faith.

It is not less miraculous to think
that accident, plus confluence of time
and chemistry, merged DNA in a soup
from which we all emerged.

Once arrived, genius needs the rest
of time to make order out of random
error, invent a goal of humanity
to which, as yet, few are willing to subscribe.

Dogma

They say it must be true because
it has been so since time began,
as though veneration accrues
to anything as common as a prayer
repeated in a foreign tongue
gains verity and sanctity thereby.

Who would contend that fear inflicted
on the young may really civilize?
Do as you are told, never ask
for explanations, the rules by which
you'll abide were written by the wise
whose antiquity is license.

Such nostrums, defied, defy inquiry
seeking truth, give validity to the myth.
