With this religious disposition and church going our country should be a model for citizens to lead moral blameless lives. Instead, our nation has the hightest crime rate. Soon we will have a million of our citizens incarcerated, surely nothing to boast about. Our murder rate is the highest, our streets are not safe. Drug use is a favorite recreation for millions.
Why in a country with so many churches and high church attendance is there so much violence and crime? The reason: Biblical morality is a poor excuse for conduct. The idea of "reward-Heaven, punishment-Hell" is juvenile and vulgar and innefective. Aside from Christianity is there any religion that allows its devotees the liberty to steal, rape and murder without limit? A Christian can be responsible for as many deaths as Hitler or Stalin, yet on his deathbed whimper "I'm so sorry" and all is forgiven. This teaching of Christianity defies reason.
Morality is a matter of common sense, good manners and aesthetics; crime and violence are ugly. Only savages need a "Holy Book" to tell them murder is wrong. When a person is civilized he needs no restraint, all his actions will be beneficial. Among civilized people, laws against pillage and murder have always been the norm, regardless of race, religion and language. The Code of Hammurabi (1792-1750 B.C.) listed hundreds of laws to "protect the weak from the strong."
I am convinced when people are civilized they need no laws or religion. Being civilized they will be too busy trying to improve life for all, to commit any misdeeds. Laws and religion do not stop crime. Living in a country awash with religious-mania does not lessen the crime-rate; paradoxically, there is an increase.
