Current Projects
We are usually working on a number of research projects around the state.
While we can't maintain a page for all of them, we have set a few just to
show you what we've been up to:
- The Center undertook a large excavation in 2001 to recover remains of
Deadwood's Chinatown under an
agreement with the City of Deadwood as part of it's historic preservation
efforts. The dig exposed the remains of structures dating back to the
1880s and thousands of artifacts of daily life in Chinese Deadwood.
- The Jim Pitts site is one of
the largest excavations we've ever undertaken.
- Hartford Beach village is a 900-year
old fortified village overlooking Big Stone Lake. We have excavated at this
site for several years with the assistance of Girl Scout volunteers.
- The Boulder Creek rockshelter,
located in the northern Black Hills, is a deep rock overhang which was
repeatedly used as a campsite for several thousand years.
- The Licking site is a bison kill located
in northwestern South Dakota. This 6500-year old site has been the subject
of a volunteer excavation for the last two years.
