Director's Note

A native of South Dakota, Joe Batt received his BFA with a concentration in Ceramics from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Montana.   He has exhibited his artwork and taught extensively throughout the Midwest.

His beguiling ceramic sculptures are partly inspired by Popular Art, partly by dreams, and partly from personal experience.  The Hare Series concentrates on anthropomorphic images of this gentle animal.

Artist's Statement: Joe Batt

For me, inspiration and ideas come from personal experiences, teaching, dreams, my sketches and from being a part of popular culture. My first encounters with hares were as a child, hunting with my father.  Perhaps this series will reveal answers to questions I have about the relationship between hunter and the hunted.  Like so many things in life, this relationship is not as simple as it appears.
