Collaborative Community

The SD Mines campus is its own community within Rapid City.  Here you’ll enjoy like-minded people with similar interests.

While we provide a rigorous STEM education and our students work hard, there is plenty of play at Mines. We offer an impressive list of clubs, CAMP teams and extracurricular activities, from the Moonrockers Robotics team to the Concrete Canoe Team to the 3D Print Club. And our teams make a name for themselves around the country and around the world. Recently the school’s Mining & Mucking Team traveled to England where they placed first in the world in the co-ed/mixed division. Our programming team traveled to Portugal to compete in the International Computer Programming Competition (ICPC) where they completed an impressive three problems in this highly competitive competition. Our Moonrockers team traveled to NASA in 2018 and placed 7th in the country in the NASA Robotic Mining Competition.

Maybe you’re more into esports? Mines was the first university in the state to create a varsity esports team and an esports certificate program, establishing ourselves at the forefront of a multi-billion dollar industry with job opportunities for its students.

Maybe you’re not interested in joining a club or team? You can still find “your people” just by living in our residence halls. Our freshmen and sophomores enjoy collaboration in the residence halls with options to live in learning communities based on interest:  Outdoor Pursuits, Service First and Exploring Rapid City.  These communities provide students with common interests to explore together.

If you can’t find a club, team or group to share an interest, we invite students to start their own clubs. We want you to find your place here at Mines; find a place that feels like home.
