Biomedical Engineering BS

Students in the undergraduate biomedical engineering program at South Dakota Mines build a strong foundation in mathematics, the basic sciences, and engineering principles).

During their first semester on campus, freshmen take Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, a course that provides students with opportunities to learn more about the field of biomedical engineering and the many career paths that can be followed within this diverse and ever-expanding discipline. Students are assigned an academic advisor to schedule coursework and grow professionally throughout their time at South Dakota Mines. They are also assigned a hybrid advisor who will help them to navigate the transition into college, develop strong study skills, and manage their time effectively during their first year on campus. Students will also work with a peer mentor, who is an upper-level student in the Biomedical Engineering program, and with the program coordinator, who can help students look for professional development opportunities and serves as a point of contact for undergraduates in the program.

Students can choose to engage in undergraduate research with faculty in the Department of Nanoscience & Biomedical Engineering and earn research credits that count towards the elective requirements for their degree.

Students are also encouraged to seek internships that provide them with industry experiences and help them to grow their professional networks. Students in our program have completed internships with companies such as Abbott, Emerson, GE Healthcare, and Medtronic.
