The Ph.D. in Data Science and Engineering is a joint collaborative program between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, and Mathematics departments. Data science is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field that involves researchers from many STEM disciplines with applications found throughout science and engineering. The advancement in business analytics can be attributed to data science and has proven to unlock actionable intelligence and insights.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 22% growth in Computer and Information Research Scientists from 2020 to 2030. This program is for you if you want to be on the cutting-edge of answering the most complex questions with data.

Outcomes

Students will participate in emerging areas of data science, including data analytics, data engineering, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), data visualization, and operations research.

Opportunities

Every industry and segment needs data science and engineering. Think advancements in medicine and precision agriculture. Think advancement in detecting illicit economies and subterranean science.

According to the World Economic Forum's “The Future of Jobs Report,” technological advances resulting from big data analytics, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and data engineering is transforming the workplace. In fact, in the same report, Data Analysts and Scientists made the top of the list of the emerging workforce in 2020, with AI and Machine Learning Specialists landing at number two.

Research

Faculty and students drive research in computer vision, machine learning, data analytics, dynamics systems and control, graph-based forecasting, autonomous cyber-physical system security, and semi-supervised and active learning for rare category detection.
