Electrical Engineering PhD
Overview
The PhD program in electrical engineering prepares students for a career in academia or research-focused careers in electrical engineering that support research commercialization prospects, drive innovation, and increase entrepreneurial opportunities. Expertise and infrastructure at South Dakota Mines support research and innovation in the following areas:
- Control and optimization
- Unmanned vehicle systems
- Electromagnetics
- Flexible antennas
- Renewable energies
- Power systems
- Nanomaterials
Current research by EE faculty is funded by the Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, NASA, and local industries, representing a collaborative environment that aims to solve societal challenges in our nation and the world. Graduates of the PhD program will find job prospects in various industry sectors such as automotive, aerospace, supply chain and transport, oil and gas, energy utilities, information and communications technologies, and infrastructure. This program provides a balance of coursework and dissertation credits, allowing for a flexible plan of study and ability to develop depth of expertise. Admission Eligibility
- Undergraduate degree GPA must be at least 3.0/4.0
- GRE is required, but there is no minimum score requirement.
- Foreign transcript evaluation (WES) is required for international students.
- A minimum of two recommendation letters are required.
- A resume (education, experience, software and hardware skills, etc.) is required.
- A statement of purpose expressing students’ wish to obtain a PhD degree in the electrical engineering program at South Dakota Mines is required.
- Evidence of English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS) is required, with the exception of applicants from countries where English is the native language. Applicants who have a degree from a U.S. institution may be considered for exemption. The South Dakota Mines school code for TOEFL reporting is 6652.
