3D and Beyond!

Prepare to Experience a World of Possibilities.

3D and Beyond! is a great introduction to the cutting-edge, exciting world of additive manufacturing and the different fields of engineering that utilize it.

Students will spend these five days at South Dakota Mines getting hands-on experience with Additive Manufacturing (AM) commonly known as 3-D printing.  Students will design parts, from concept to prototype, utilizing the engineering design process using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to produce functional assemblies that address real world engineering challenges with the guidance of current Mines students.

Students will learn about the fundamentals of additive manufacturing processes while participating in demonstrations and activities that increase their awareness of the practical uses and limitations of the technology. Students will apply their understanding of these processes in a series of personal and group design projects that will further expand on their new abilities.

During this day camp students will:

  • Learn how to use CAD softwares such as Autodesk Fusion 360 to make and edit 3D models.
  • Use slicers including Repetier Host, Cura, MatterControl, PrusaSlicer and more to convert these files into 3D printable objects.
  • Gain experience learning safety, troubleshooting, and design applications of many different 3D Printing machines and tools.

The future of Additive Manufacturing is an exciting, innovative field that incorporates many aspects of engineering, and there is no doubt that it will revolutionize the products we use, and the processes used to make them. The purpose of this camp is to open students’ minds to the endless possibilities of 3D printing. The core goal of this summer camp is to inspire creativity through freedom of design and vast supply of information, resources, and experience at students’ fingertips.
