Summer Camp:  CBE Summer Institute

Chemical and Biological Engineering

Explore the fascinating world of Chemical and Biological Engineering in this hands-on career camp!

You'll get in touch with your inner mad scientist, and learn what it is like to be a chemical, biochemical or biological engineer!

Spend the week doing hands-on experiments in labs and elsewhere. Make friends with other people interested in this essential area of science and engineering while you learn about things like:

  • chemical process design
  • converting biomass into products, such as biofuels or biopolymers
  • processing of microelectronic devices
  • creating and purifying biopharmaceuticals
  • developing high-tech nano-materials and nano-energetics
  • generating alternative energy by novel catalysts
  • and designing food processes for consumption . . . think: CHOCOLATE!

ENROLLMENT PROCESS:

While completing the online registration, the student will be required to submit a 500-800 word essay that explains:

  1. Who you are as a student
  2. Why coming to this camp is important to you
  3. What your expectations are for the camp
  4. What attributes you bring to the camp

Students may wish to complete this essay in advance.

Additionally, we ask for the contact information (name, email and phone number) of a trusted teacher be provided so that we can ask that they complete a brief recommendation survey for the student.

It's important to note that acceptance into the program is not guaranteed. Evaluation and notification will take place for each student after the registration form, personal essay and teacher recommendation are completed and returned to the camp director, Dr. David Dixon.

DaveDixonThe SD Mines Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) teaches aspiring young scientists and engineers who go on to tackle global problems, like the inter-relationships between food, water and energy, to create new materials and pharmaceuticals, and develop a wide range of devices, products and processes   ( Learn more about this field).

The CBE Institute Camp is directed by Dr. David Dixon who, along with the entire CBE faculty, helps bring chemical and biological engineering alive for camp students.
