Summer Camp:  Geology Rocks!

Are you ready to dig into Geology?

Students in this hands-on career camp will experience all of the geology the Black Hills area has to offer. Get prepared to sleep under the stars and camp in the Black Hills as you make friends and learn about geology and geological engineering!

From the ancient rock layers of the Black Hills, to the crystals and natural formations of area caverns and the fossils in the Badlands, the unique geology of the area makes Geology Rocks! a one-of-a-kind camp available only at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Topics that students will learn about -- through real experiences or hands-on learning activities -- include:

  • Discussion of minerals, rocks and fossils, and their relation to Black Hills geologic history
  • Basic geology
  • Topographic maps
  • Geologic maps
  • Water
  • Geologic hazards such as: landslides and volcanoes
  • Geology of the Black Hills
  • The creation of mountains and land-forms

The Geology Rocks! youth camp provides high school students the opportunity to learn about potential careers in the geosciences.  Campers observe the world-renowned Black Hills geology and the role it plays in surface and ground-water quality, geologic hazards, mineral resources, and paleontology.

The experiences in this camp will inspire students to complete degrees so they can fill important jobs in the minerals industry under the scope of geology and geological engineering.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS:

While completing the online registration, the student will be required to submit a 500-800 word essay that explains:

  1. Who you are as a student
  2. Why coming to this camp is important to you
  3. What your expectations are for the camp
  4. What attributes you bring to the camp

Additionally, we ask for the contact information (name, email and phone number) of a trusted teacher be provided so that we can ask that they complete a brief recommendation survey for the student.

It's important to note that acceptance into the program is not guaranteed. Evaluation and notification will take place for each student after the registration form, personal essay and teacher recommendation are completed and returned to the Summer Camps Coordinator, Taylor Davis.
