Summer Camp:  Mining and Explosives

Get ready for an explosive experience and a week you won't soon forget!

You will spend the week learning the science behind explosives and seeing how engineers use detonations to unearth precious minerals, shape the landscape, or even sculpt Crazy Horse and his horse’s head from a mountain side.

You will take a close-up and personal view of mining and explosives engineering guided by trained explosives experts. Field trips to active mines will let you see blasts, and—if camp coordinators can arrange it—apply your explosives knowledge to the detonation of different materials!

Across the globe, the mineral industries are thriving with record high prices of precious metals and an ever-increasing demand for basic materials and energy.  The Mining and Explosives Camp gives students a glimpse into the world of mining engineering.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS:

While completing the online registration, the student will be required to submit a 500-800 word essay that explains:

  1. Who you are as a student
  2. Why coming to this camp is important to you
  3. What your expectations are for the camp
  4. What attributes you bring to the camp

Students may wish to complete this essay in advance.

Additionally, we ask for the contact information (name, email and phone number) of a trusted teacher be provided so that we can ask that they complete a brief recommendation survey for the student.

It's important to note that acceptance into the program is not guaranteed. Evaluation and notification will take place for each student after the registration form, personal essay and teacher recommendation are completed and returned to the Summer Camps Coordinator.
