Summer Camp:  Fossils

Fossils . . . Molding . . . Casting . . . OH MY!

If you are into paleontology enough to work in the field alongside professors and graduate students, and roll up your sleeves as you prep, collect, mold, and cast fossils for examination in the lab, then this camp is for you!

The resources of the brand-new state-of-the-art James E. Martin Paleontology Research Laboratory makes offering this unique camp possible. You will live on campus and, literally, walk the path of paleontologists in the Black Hills and Badlands! The curriculum is designed and taught by full-time engineering and science faculty members. Senior-level students and graduate students will  work with you all week. You will discuss science and engineering careers with School of Mines faculty members and alumni, and visit work sites where you might use your expertise should you decide to take your studies further.

Students will get a chance to assist School of Mines faculty in fossil collection. Campers' discoveries will be credited and stored in the SD Mines' collections indefinitely - your very own documented contribution to the study of paleontology!

ENROLLMENT PROCESS:

While completing the online registration, the student will be required to submit a 500-800 word essay that explains:

  1. Who you are as a student
  2. Why coming to this camp is important to you
  3. What your expectations are for the camp
  4. What attributes you bring to the camp

Students may wish to complete this essay in advance.

Additionally, we ask for the contact information (name, email and phone number) of a trusted teacher be provided so that we can ask that they complete a brief recommendation survey for the student.

It's important to note that acceptance into the program is not guaranteed. Evaluation and notification will take place for each student after the registration form, personal essay and teacher recommendation are completed and returned to the Summer Camps Coordinator.
