The National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) is a one-week highly competitive high school summer residential program funded by the Federal Highway Administration and administered by the South Dakota Department of Transportation. The program
is designed to provide high school students (grades 9-12) an opportunity to explore careers in transportation sciences.
During this one-week residential adventure campers will:
- Take part in hands-on exploration of our transportation systems.
- Exploring career opportunities and develop new skills.
- Take field trips have included the Rapid City Regional Airport, Tour of Dakota Water Science Center of US Geological Survey, and Pennington County Highway Division.
- Participate in Get College Ready sessions
- Recreational activities emphasizing Team Building, Leadership and Communication.

The focus of this program will be to emphasize the role of mathematical modeling in the design of transportation specific to land, air and water infrastructure systems. Students will come away understanding the career opportunities in the transportation
sector and will be encouraged to pursue college degrees that prepare them for transportation-related courses of study in their higher education pursuits.
The South Dakota Mines NSTI program’s objectives are to improve STEM skills and provide awareness to high school students - particularly minority, female and disadvantaged youth about careers in transportation.
Accepted students will receive full scholarships to participate in the NSTI program that would cover the cost of room, board and tuition, supplies and any associated costs with field trips. We are following SD DOH guidelines and CDC recommendations
in all our summer camp activities.
ENROLLMENT PROCESS:
All prospective campers must complete the following items before their summer camp application will be evaluated.
- Submit the online registration with a Student Interests Statement including a short essay with the following:
- Submit transcripts
- Submit a teacher recommendation letter.
- Submit waivers.
It's important to note that
acceptance into each camp is not guaranteed. Evaluation and notification will take place for each student after the registration form, personal essay, transcripts, and teacher recommendation are completed and returned to South
