Graduate Fellowships

The primary source of funding for graduate students is graduate assistantships. Visit our Department Support page for more information. Contact your prospective Academic Department to find out what they might offer in terms of assistantships, fellowships, and hourly pay.

Graduate Education Fellowships

Nominations and applications are now being accepted for the 2024/2025 Graduate Education fellowships. The nominating department or faculty member should submit all required materials in a single application package to GradOffice@sdsmt.edu by the close of business on Thursday, March 7.    

These fellowships are funded by the generous support of individual donors to South Dakota Mines CARA.  The criteria for each award varies depending upon the requests of the donor.  Please carefully review the criteria and requirements for each award. Applicants may apply for more than one award. Recipients must be enrolled during the award period for the number of credits specified.  For nomination purposes, programs with an MS and PhD option are considered as one program.  

Ivanhoe Excellence Fellowship ($1,000) 

Up to 4 Ivanhoe Excellence Fellowship awards are available for new and current MS students from any country. A department nomination is not required for this award. Students may submit the application form directly to GradOffice@sdsmt.edu. PhD students are not eligible to apply.

Ivanhoe Fellowship ($5,500) 
Up to 4 Ivanhoe Fellowship awards are available for new and current MS students who are citizens of Bangladesh, China, Ghana, Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, or Turkey.  PhD students are not eligible to apply. This fellowship requires a nomination and matching full-time assistantship from a department or faculty member.

Joseph Nelson Fellowship ($3,600 and $8,700) 

Each academic program may submit one nomination for the Joseph Nelson Fellowship. If you wish to be nominated for this award, please contact your advisor or program coordinator.   

One $3,600 award and one $8,700 will be presented to a new or current student in any graduate program at South Dakota Mines; priority will be given to nominees enrolled in one of physical science fields listed below as defined by the donor. U.S. citizenship is not required. 

• Geology emphasis 
• Meteorology emphasis

Kate Simmons Teskey Fellowship ($7,500)

Each academic program may submit one nomination for the Kate Simmons Teskey Fellowship. If you wish to be nominated for this award, please contact your advisor or program coordinator.  

1 award will be presented to a new graduate student at South Dakota Mines. U.S. citizenship is required.  Mines undergraduate students who are completing their bachelor’s degree in spring or summer 2024 are eligible to apply. Students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program at South Dakota Mines are not eligible. This fellowship requires a matching full-time assistantship from a department or faculty member.

Lawrence J. Mazlack Fellowship ($3,000)

The Lawrence Mazlack fellowship award will be presented to 1 student in each PhD program. Recipients are selected by their program heads. This fellowship requires a matching full-time assistantship from a department or faculty member. Programs should submit the Authorization for Nonworking Fellowship form to the Graduate Office to award the funds. 

William Griffith Fellowship ($3,000) 

Each of the programs listed below may submit one nomination for the William Griffith Fellowship. If you wish to be nominated for this award, please contact your advisor or program coordinator.   

1 award will be presented to a new or current South Dakota Mines graduate student enrolled in one the following programs. U.S. citizenship is required.  

• Chemical & Biological Engineering (Chemical Engineering emphasis)   
  
• Geology & Geological Engineering
  
• Materials Engineering & Science (Metallurgical emphasis) 
  
• Mining Engineering & Management (Mining Engineering emphasis)
