Pre-Health Advising
South Dakota Mines uses a dual advising model in which students work with academic advisors within their department to schedule coursework and with the Pre-Health Pathways Advisor to plan their career goals and find professional development opportunities, such as shadowing, internships, entrance exam preparation, workshops, conferences, etc.
The Pre-Health Pathways office (located in the Student Success Center) prepares students for careers in health care by helping them to:
- Explore various health professions
- Create a personal timeline after selecting a pre-health pathway
- Identify opportunities for shadowing, conducting research, applying to internship/fellowship/summer enrichment programs, and volunteer experiences
- Develop their professional skills through workshops, conferences, discussion panels, and other professional development activities
- Prepare for entrance exams, such as the GRE, MCAT, DAT, OAT, or PCAT
- Revise personal statements, essays, and other application materials
- Navigate the application process for professional programs
- Practice for interviews
The Pre-Health Pathways office also releases communications to students via the Pre-Health Mailing List and The Atrium (a pre-health blog).
