International Students  

We realize international students may have additional obstacles to overcome getting to the United States. We have several Frequently Asked Questions that may answer your questions. Residence Life 

  • Reduced the occupancy limit for several rooms housing multiple residents to promote the safety in our communities.

Important Dates

  • July 29 - August 5 (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.): Drop & Go option available to students
  • July 15 (12 p.m.): Deadline for booking Check-In times (assigned after by Residence Life)
  • August 15 - 17 (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.): First year students scheduled Check-Ins and Move-In
  • August 15 - 18 (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.): Returning students scheduled Check-Ins and Move-In

Dining 

To help with social distancing, dining services will be offering new locations for dining and pickup.

Residential locations (Board Meal from Meal Plans)

· Hardrocker Café, located in the Surbeck Center, is the main location to use your board meals and available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There will be two temporary distribution locations available. The Surbeck Ballroom will be available for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the King Center will be available for dinner Monday-Friday. Accommodations are being made for Covid-19 including no self-served items and social distancing efforts including limited seating and one-stop meal stations.

Retail locations (Meal Plan Flex, Grubby Gold, Cash or Credit Card)

· Einstein Bros Bagels is located in Rocker Square I. Miner’s Shack is located in the Surbeck Center and has a Grille Works, Bene Pizza and assortment of convenience items. We also will have a temporary location available in the library for lunch featuring Einstein Bros Bagels grab and go items as well as a small selection of convenience items. All retail locations will operate with accommodations made for Covid-19 related to self-served items.

Wellness Center 

Changes to operations include:

  • A new waiver must be completed before you utilize the facility.
  • Masks are not required but encouraged.
  • Please wash your hands before and after you use the Wellness Center for at least 20 seconds or apply hand sanitizer.
  • Set capacity limits of 18 people for the Center, 14 for the group exercise studio, and 2 for the Climbing Wall.
  • A 60-minute time limit for workouts.
  • Do not share equipment, mats, or weights. Wipe off equipment for the next person.
  • No spotting Allowed (Lift only weight you can control)
  • No “working in” on equipment. Finish sets and wipe off equipment for the next person.
  • Maintain 6ft social distancing CDC guidelines.
  • Locker rooms are open for use with social distancing guidelines in place.  

Locker Rentals or Item Retrieval

New locker rentals are not available until Monday, August 15. Items left from spring can be picked up by scheduling a time with the Wellness Center Director – email Michael.vanderheyden@sdsmt.edu.


Book Store 

  • Visit Store Website  www.hardrockershop.com for extensive information on course materials, etc. 
  • Only online orders will be accepted for course materials.  The course materials area of the store will be closed to the public. 
  • Online ordering of course materials is slated to start July 22.  Students are being encouraged to place their orders by August 5. 
  • Rocker Shop will strive to fulfill all orders placed after August 5th within 24-48 hours. 
  • All online orders placed by student residing on campus will be delivered to the student’s room or their campus mailbox (depending upon when ordered). 
  • Online orders for commuter students will be distributed from the Bump Lounge in Surbeck Center.  Times and days TBD. 

Campus Life  

  • We understand that the college experience requires opportunities for social activity. Our plans allow for students to gather, but in smaller groups and with proper physical distancing. 
  • All meetings and social gatherings should be planned in accordance with current CDC, South Dakota Dept. of Health, Rapid City regulations, and campus guidelines. This includes the number of participants and accommodates for proper physical distancing. 
  • All university-sponsored events and activities need to accommodate remote participation when activity is otherwise happening face to face to provide access to those who cannot attend in person. 
  • Fraternity houses will be open so long as students are able to use physical distancing best practices. 
  • All student organization-sponsored events and programs must be pre-approved by the organization faculty/staff advisor or designee.

Course Delivery, Classrooms, and Student Support 

  • To ensure flexibility, classes will be offered in various formats: in-person, online, and a hybrid of in-person and online with proper distancing applied to in-person settings. 
  • The Fall semester will begin and end earlier (Aug. 19-Dec. 8).
  • All student services will be offered, including advising, peer mentors, tutoring, and counseling through in-person and remote options. 
  • Faculty will offer in-person and virtual office hours.
  • Labs will be offered in-person with additional lab hours to accommodate smaller groups.
  • Auto-tracking cameras being installed in classrooms.
  • Moving to workstation laptops instead of tablets for students
  • Zoom moved to Internet2 technology
