Residential Peer Mentor (RPM) Application Information & Important Dates

The Residential Peer Mentor (RPM) serves as an important academic resource to their assigned residential community by providing tutoring, mentoring, and academic activities.  The RPM reports to the Residence Life Office and an assigned Assistant Director/Area Coordinator.  RPMs are assigned to the Connolly/Palmerton community, the Placer community, and the Peterson community.  RPM selection is a competitive process that aims to hire students who are passionate about helping peers succeed and passionate about our University.

RPM Application Information

  • Essay: The application requires you to answer the following essay question: "What skills do you hope to bring to the RPM position? What do you hope to learn?" We ask that you limit your response to 500 words or less and recommend preparing this essay ahead of time in Word and copy/pasting into your application
  • References: You must list two references on your application that we may contact.  The first should be a SD Mines faculty reference who can comment on your academic ability. The second should be a personal reference who can comment on your ability to be an RPM and work in Residence Life.

  • Mon. March 2: RPM Applications Due (12noon)
  • March 4-5: RPM Interviews

Resident Advisor (RA) Application Information & Important Dates

RAs are vital members of the Residence Life staff.  Each living community has an RA to ensure we create positive, healthy communities where students can live, learn, and thrive.  RA selection is an in-depth process to ensure we hire the best RAs we can; through our selection process, we aim to hire students who will commit themselves to their communities, to their residents, and to our University.

RA Selection Timeline

  • Jan. 15 & 16 (8pm): RA and RPM Information Sessions in CB203
  • Fri. Jan. 17: RA Application Available Online
  • Thurs. Feb. 6: RA Application and References Due
  • Tues. Feb. 11: Group Interview Process, 7-9:30pm. All applicants must attend.
  • Feb. 19-21: Individual Interviews
  • Wed. Feb. 27: Hiring Notifications

Application Details

  • The online application must be completed in one sitting. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Please make sure you are prepared to answer all questions, especially our two essay questions. These essays should be no more than 500 words. We recommend writing your responses in Word and then copying/pasting into the online application
  • Essay 1: Review the SD Mines Inclusion Statement. What does this statement mean to you?  What should an inclusive community look like in residential housing and how can an RA foster such an inclusive community?
  • Essay 2: What skills do you hope to bring to the RA position? What do you hope to learn?
  • The group interview is required of all applicants and is scheduled for Tues, Feb. 11 from 7-9:30pm. Please ensure you clear your schedule now so that you can attend.

RA References

  • You must have two people submit a reference
  • One reference must be a SD Mines faculty/staff member (non-ResLife)
  • The other reference may be any person who can comment on your potential to be an RA
  • Online reference forms are due Feb. 6
