Housing Information 2020-2021

The University and Residence Life recognize the ever-changing circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic and its potential impact on what campus living looks like this fall. Our department has been working on changes to procedures and practices that actively and intentionally promote the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff.

Housing for Students Required to Live On Campus
Residence Life offers housing to all freshmen and sophomores required to live in campus housing.  In accordance with South Dakota Board of Regents policy, all students who graduated from high school in 2019 or 2020 are required to live on-campus during the 2020-2021 academic year. Housing for All Upperclass and Graduate Students
Residence Life offers Rocker Square I and Rocker Square II for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.  Please explore this section to learn more about upperclass housing options.

Fall 2020 Adjusted Housing Dates and Room/Meal Plan Rates (Updated 8/11/2020)

With the new Fall 2020 Modified Semester schedule, fall housing dates and room/meal plan rates are adjusted to account for the decreased number of days on campus. This will automatically update for each residential student. The Extended Semester Housing and Dining Application is now live for students. See the Housing and Dining Rates page for details.  

Fall 2020 Rocker Square Housing Closed to New Applicants (Updated 7/23/2020)

Residence Life is no longer accepting applications for housing in Rocker Square I or II. This is the housing available to students not required to live on campus (high school graduation year prior to 2019).

Fall 2020 Residence Hall Move-In Dates (Updated 6/11/2020)

For detailed information regarding our Move-In process, please check out our Fall 2020 Move-In page. After you have received your housing assignment email to your South Dakota Mines address, you will receive instructions on how to sign up for a check-in window through our booking website.  These thirty minute windows will allow us to understand the number of residents and their guests present in the halls during the Move-In process.  This year, Check-Ins will be located at the entrance of your assigned building (weather permitted).  If your preferred Check-In time is not available, please choose a different one.  We are unable to accommodate after hour Check-Ins this fall semester. Instead, this year we have the following options for you.

July 29 - August 5 (8AM - 4PM)        Drop & Go option available to students
                           July 20  (8AM)        Deadline for booking Check-In times (assigned after by Residence Life)
     August 15 - 17 (8AM - 4PM)        First year students scheduled Check-Ins and Move-In
     August 15 - 18 (8AM - 4PM)        Returning students scheduled Check-Ins and Move-In

Changes to On-Campus Living (Updated 5/29/2020)

In addition to measures that will be in place through the University, Residence Life has been developing plans to promote student health in the halls. Some of the adjustments to policy and procedures may include:

  • Increased surface and facility cleaning with EPA-registered disinfectants, equipment, and materials
  • Promotion of physical distancing best practices in all designated areas, including lounges, study rooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens
  • Adaptations to guest policies and procedures
  • Changes to hall occupancy and room-type availability (see below)

Room-Type Availability and Occupancy Changes (Updated 5/29/2020)

In preparing for the fall semester, multiple changes to room availability have been made. As you are thinking about coming to campus this August, we hope our new changes and options will make you feel more comfortable. Some rooms in various halls will be reserved to accommodate possible isolation needs of our residents.

For Students required to live on campus:

We have reduced the occupancy limit for several rooms housing multiple residents to promote the safety in our communities.  These reductions will be located in Palmerton, Connolly, and Howard Peterson Halls. We have changed a number of double-occupancy rooms to “Doubles as Singles” - rooms housing only one student. 

As a result:

  • There will only be a limited number of quads, study/deluxe quads, triples, and doubles.
  • Students will be placed into regular occupancy or reduced occupancy spaces based on availability.
  • Students were able to opt-in to doubles as singles, changing their housing preference. Students who opted into these spaces were be placed into those rooms (based on availability) before others were assigned to those rooms.

Double as Single Rooms:  

  • We have limited availability and assigned these spaces on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • These doubles as singles are the size of double rooms and come furnished for two people (two beds, desks, dressers, etc.); however, we will only assign one person to the room.
