Winter Break Information
All campus housing closes at 12:00PM noon on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Expect to leave for break within 24 hours of your last final or by noon on Thursday, December 19, 2024 whichever occurs first.
Campus housing will reopen at 8:00AM on Sunday, January 12, 2025.

Late Stay & Early Arrival Process
Application deadline for Winter Break Housing: 12:00PM noon Monday, December 2, 2024
Students must complete the online Winter Break Housing Application [under revision] by
the application deadline to avoid any late application costs.
Please remember housing over break is not guaranteed. All requests are reviewed and availability confirmed by Residence Life before acceptance and approval of applications.
All students contracted with Residence Life to stay on-campus for any duration between noon December 19, 2024 – 8:00am January 12, 2025 will be charged a nightly rate (for a maximum of 15 days of billing).
2023-2024 Rates are below. 2024-2025 rates pending approval by the SD Board of Regents, typically in April each year.

Students on campus for participation in departmental employment, NCAA in-season athletics, academic coursework requiring physical presence (as noted above) are eligible to receive a 50% discount for dates they are required to be on campus. Residence
Life will contact the listed supervisor, faculty member, or coach to confirm required presence and dates. To receive the 75% discount, the application must be submitted, and confirmation received from the supervisor, faculty member, or coach before
noon on December 2, 2024.
Winter Break Checklist
A checklist will be placed on all resident doors that outlines specific items that must be done before leaving for Winter Break. Please refer to this checklist for specific items in your residence hall. In general, all students must ensure the following is done before leaving for break:
- Close and lock all windows
- Close drapes or blinds
- Set thermostat to 65°F (Palmerton, Connolly, & Peterson Halls) or 60°F (Placer Hall & Rocker Square Apartments) and the fan to "auto"
- Ensure HVAC unit and sensors are not blocked
- Remove all perishable items
- Remove all trash, recycling, and clean room
- Unplug Appliances:
- Residence Halls - all appliances including refrigerators and computer systems
- Rocker Apartments - all appliances and computer systems, except major kitchen items
- Turn off all lights
- Lock doors
- Return rented books to Rocker Shop
Note: Residence Life and Facilities staff enter all rooms over break to perform preventative maintenance and to ensure all items on the checklist are completed. Fines will be issued for items not completed.
Residents Not Returning for the Spring 2025 Semester

Students not returning for the spring semester must notify Katie Wahls, Director of Housing & Operations in Residence Life about the status of their housing contract (email

Vacating Deadline: 12:00PM noon on Thursday, December 19, 2024
Students who are not returning to housing second semester must vacate by 12:00PM noon on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
Graduating Students Extended Deadline: Noon on Sunday, December 22, 2024
Students graduating on December 16, 2023 will be able to stay in housing until 5:00PM on December 22, 2024 at no cost.
Return Rooms to Move-In Condition & Turn In Access Cards & Keys
Rooms must be returned to move-in condition: cleaned, damage-free, and with all University furniture.
Rocker Square Residents must return all keys and cards to Residence Life via an "Express Check-Out" envelope (2 keys, 1 card). Envelopes will be provided to all students who are leaving. Extra envelopes can be found at the Surbeck Front Desk. Failure
to return all keys/cards will result in improper check-out and re-keying charges. Envelopes can be returned to the Residence Life Office or in the Residence Life maildrop when the office is closed.
Update Mail Forwarding Address
Mail will automatically be forwarded to the address on file with the University. If another address is desired, complete the online request here.
