Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)

SHPE's mission is to "change lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize their fullest potential and impacts the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.."

Our South Dakota Mines SHPE chapter serves as a supportive community for minority students in STEM on campus. Established in 2010, strives to provide professional enrichment, service outlets, and social support for our members.

We are brought together by heritage, social responsibility and desire to improve the equality of all people through the use of science and technology.  We value excellence in education, professional pursuits, and leadership. 

Our SHPE chapter provides a wide variety of opportunities to help you achieve your goals in STEM and thrive at South Dakota Mines. These opportunities include:

OBJECTIVES

  • Stimulate and develop student interest in STEM (Science, Technology , Engineering , & Math)
  • Strive to increase the number of minority students studying engineering at undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Encourage members to seek advanced degrees in  engineering or related fields and to obtain professional engineering registrations
  • Promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for Hispanics and other minorities in that profession
  • Function as a representative body on issues and developments that affect the careers of Hispanic/Latino/a professionals.
