The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology campus is Sheltering-in-Place due to <Shooting OR Stabbing OR Armed Suspect> <day/date/time>. Students and all campus personnel are instructed to follow these instructions immediately:

  • Find nearest shelter area (room with a door, do not use elevators).
  • Lock/barricade the door.
  • Shut windows and window coverings.
  • Sit/crouch out of sight from doors and windows.
  • Take a roll call.
  • Turn off the lights and remain quiet and calm.
  • Silence cell phones and all electronics.
  • Stay in contact using the Internet, if available, for situation updates.
  • Do not evacuate for a fire alarm unless instructed by university personnel.
  • Do not open the door for anyone.
  • If hazardous incident, turn off all heating, air conditioning units and/or fans. Tape off or block all vents, cracks, or openings.
  • In labs, reduce all operations to a safe condition as quickly as possible. Fume hoods should have sash in closed position.
  • Shelter-in-Place will remain in effect until lifted by authorized personnel.
  • The campus will receive an all-clear form the Campus Alert system. Campus Safety or other university personnel will unlock the door to notify you when the emergency has passed.
