Student Emergency Fund

We know many of you are facing unforeseen physical, emotional, and mental hardships due to the effects of COVID-19 on daily life. Through the generous donations from our Hardrocker family, the SD Mines Foundation is raising funds to support students who have been financially impacted by the current situation surrounding COVID-19. The fund will help cover:

  • Travel and temporary relocation assistance
  • Living expenses
  • Amenities such as internet for taking online classes
  • Income from lost wages
  • Support for emotional, physical, and mental well-being

Students must be enrolled at least part time at SD Mines to be eligible for emergency funds. The amount of support each student may receive will be determined on a case-by-case basis depending on funds available. Once approved, the Office of Financial Aid will award the emergency funds and a refund will be credited to the students. Applications will be reviewed on a regular basis until funds are no longer available. Funds awarded do not need to be repaid.

Please note that any requests made for on-campus housing or meal plan refunds will not be approved because students who are eligible for those refunds will be receiving them directly from the university.

Students who are only granted a partial amount of their original request may be able to receive the remaining amount if funds allow. Students may also submit a second application if their circumstances change and additional funds are needed.

There is a different emergency fund for students who are experiencing extenuating financial circumstances that are not related to COVID-19. For more information on this fund, contact Dr. Patricia Mahon, Dean of Students, at or 605-394-2416.

We are extremely thankful to the generous donors who have made the Student Emergency Fund possible! Any student who has received an award and is interested in recording a video testimonial for the SD Mines Foundation’s upcoming “thank you” video, please contact Bryan Konechne at
