Brown Bag Presentation - Rot & Recycle: Gothic Approaches to Eco-burial

Presented by Laura Kremmel. Recent conversations about burial practices have included the concept of ecoburial, or environmentally-conscious methods of honoring the dead and disposing of the body, ranging from natural burial to alternative types of cremation. But, these conversations are not new. Since the eighteenth century, concerns about the toxicity of burial grounds and the ill effects of contaminated corpses have influenced calls for cemetery reform, as well as popular literature, particularly within the Gothic tradition. While the Gothic has often been accused of recycling its own tropes and descriptions, it also depicts creative methods of repurposing the dead and revaluing decay. Combining elements of the medical humanities/history, ecocriticism, and literary theory, this presentation looks at literary and media examples that emphasize a disturbing hybridity of life, death, decay, and regrowth built on the principles that motivate modern environmental concerns.
