STEAM Cafe -- Into the Frozen Abyss - The Franklin expedition of 1845

The Franklin expedition of 1845 has long since passed into myth and legend. In 1845 two ships and 129 men departed Greenland into the unknown with the goal of finding the Northwest Passage. It was into this abyss they would never return. The rescue mission spanned nearly ten years and mapped large portions of the high arctic. Of Franklin though they only found bones and artifacts with little knowledge of how and why the expedition met its fate. In the last few years both ships have been found and modern expeditions have shed light on what happened to the men and their leaders. The recent miniseries The Terror spun a supernatural tale while updating the expedition’s story and putting faces to the names long lost. This talk outlines the history, technology, geography and possible fate of the expedition from the numerous published sources. Bring your warm clothes and hot chocolate as Dr. Dreyer transports you to the Canadian High Arctic in the golden age of polar exploration.
