Tablet PC Program

Piloted in 2006, the South Dakota Mines Tablet PC Program has evolved from 25 pilot-users to its current all-student format serving more than 2,000 students. The evolution of the program has heavily depended on student and faculty feedback and many student-suggested solutions have been implemented into the program.

The program’s success has expanded the diversity of teaching methods both inside and outside the classroom by offering students greater active learning opportunities.

The Tablet PC Program is mandatory for all undergraduate students taking six or more credits and who have South Dakota Mines as their home university. There are occasions in which a student may request to not be part of the program. For more information, please visit the Tablet PC Opt-Out page.

Students enrolled in the Tablet PC Program will receive a tablet computer from ITS for academic and personal use. Tablets offer the same features of a traditional laptop with the added convenience of a rotatable screen, touch screen capabilities, and stylus. The screen pivots 180 degrees in either direction and can fold down to function as an electronic notebook when using the stylus, virtually eliminating the need for paper notes.

Features of the Tablet PC Program:

  • Free Service and Support at the ITS Help Desk
  • Access to licensed, professional software
  • Integration of Tablet PCs into many classes
  • Access to a secure wireless network across campus
  • Keep computer over breaks, including Summer and Winter breaks
  • 20 GB of secure network storage

Tablet computers are leased for four years and, after the four years, you get to keep the computer as your own. At this time, you will also be assigned a new computer for the remaining time at South Dakota Mines. Please note that even after the four years you will remain a part of the program while enrolled in courses at Mines, even if you do not pick up a new computer. You are required to turn in your tablet upon leaving or graduating if the tablet has not reached its four year old status.

Semester fees are set by the South Dakota Board of Regents and are calculated into student tuition.
