New Student Orientation

Welcome to Our Mines Family.  All new students will need to attend an orientation prior to the start of the semester. Orientation helps prepare you for the challenges you will face during your academic career here at SD Mines.

    Students your meal plans will cover the cost of your meals during orientation. Parents, guests, and students without meal plans will need to pay for meals.

ACCUPLACER® placement testing for Math and English

Due to the large number of students who have not completed or may elect to re-test their ACCUPLACER® placement testing for fall, we will have two special sessions in the Electrical Engineering/Physics Building (EP).

  • Thursday, August 16th from 8:00 am-Noon and from 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm, Electrical Engineering/Physics (EP) room 255 (First come first served walk-ins)
  • Saturday, August 18th from 9:00 am-Noon, Electrical Engineering/Physics (EP) room 255. (By appointment only for re-testers, or those who cannot test on August 16th.)

Test proctors can be reached on the days of testing by cell phone: (605) 209-0420. Students are encouraged to make appointments for testing at earlier times & days to enable the Registrar's office to finalize class schedules for incoming students. Appointments can be made by contacting the Tom Mahon, Tutoring and Testing Coordinator at or calling 605-394-2428.


Students can pick up their Tablet PC’s on the hour at the following times


Students will be divided into 8 orientation groups. Each group will rotate through the following sessions on Friday and Saturday with an assigned Orientation Leader. *Note this is a working schedule, students will be emailed their individual schedule over the summer.

Orientation: Athletics

Cross Country, Soccer & Cheerleading - August 12, 2018   | Student Schedule      
Hardrocker cross country, football, soccer, and volleyball players will move into their residence halls prior to their assigned orientation session. These orientations are specifically designed for student athletes. Sessions will also be available for parents. You can register for the athletic orientations through the Interactive Checklist.

Orientation: International Students
(This is a two-day orientation)

Wednesday, August 15, 2018 (9:00 am- 3:00 pm) and Thursday, August 16, 2018 (9:00 am- Noon)                                                      
All international students must attend this session. This orientation provides international students with information specific to their status and their transition to the US, including differences in culture and the educational system. All international students are required to attend this orientaton session in addition to registering for New Student Orientation. Registration coming soon!

Orientation: Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) Pre-Orientation

Tuesday, August 14- Thursday, August 16, 2018                                                       
Open to all incoming domestic studetns of color.
