RAPID CITY, SD (March 15, 2018) – The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology
department of Mechanical
Engineering has been ranked sixth in the nation by Schools.com.
Schools.com bases its rankings on data
from the United States Department of Education.
Utilizing a 13-point rating system, Schools.com ranks more than 1,600 U.S.
schools based on affordability, flexibility and other quantitative factors,
including graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratio and size of the program.
SD Mines offers undergraduate,
graduate
and Ph.D.
degrees in mechanical engineering, as well as six online
programs. Currently, the three mechanical engineering programs have more
than 600 students enrolled.
“We are extremely proud that our
department of mechanical engineering has been named sixth in the nation” said
department head Pierre Larochelle, Ph.D. “Our faculty and staff work diligently
to ensure that our students receive the very best education. We are proud to be
educating the next generation of mechanical engineers.”
The mechanical engineering department at
SD Mines is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2018. The program
began in 1943, graduating its first two mechanical engineers four years later.
More than 3,300 mechanical engineers have graduated from the SD Mines
Mechanical Engineering Department since 1947.
