SD Mines Hosts 93 Employers for Spring Career Fair

The South Dakota company RESPEC was one of the 93 employers at the 2018 spring student Career Fair.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Feb. 13, 2018) – The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology hosted 93 employers for the annual spring Career Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the King Center in the Goodell Gym. The event was open to Mines students and alumni.

For SD Mines students, navigating the large fair with so many employers in a short period of time can be daunting. Fortunately, students were able to use the SD Mines Career Fair app which included a list of employers, majors of interest, positions, information sessions, and a map of the fair booths.

More than 1,000 Mines students attended, networking with employers including Bobcat,Cargill, Caterpillar, Garmin, Kiewit, Nucor and Union Pacific as well as regional companies and engineering firms. In all, 93 employers from 18 states, including 41 exhibitors from South Dakota, were on hand to visit with Mines students. South Dakota employers included Black Hills Corporation, Daktronics, Raven Industries, Regional Health, RESPEC, Sanford Health and Vishay.

SD Mines plays an important role in helping the state meet its workforce needs. In the last five years, 272 graduates accepted jobs with 142 employers in 28 South Dakota communities. Ten of the employers were participating in their first career fair at Mines. In addition, many of the employers stayed to conduct next-day interviews.

SD Mines graduates continue to be in demand, with 77 percent landing at least one paid internship before graduation, a 96 percent job placement rate and an average starting salary of $63,000.
