SD Mines VEX U Robotics Team Places 12th in World

RAPID CITY, SD (April 30, 2018) – The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology VEX U Robotics team placed 12th in the world during the 2018 VEX U Robotics World Championship April 26-28, in Louisville, Ky.

There were 89 university teams competing in the 11th annual VEX U World competition.

The VEX U college and university competitions had more than 300 teams competing in local tournaments throughout the year. Only those teams that have success at local, regional and national competitions progress to VEX U Worlds.

At competition, teams compete against each other in timed events evaluating the robots’ proficiency and skill at accomplishing tasks. Robots are required to compete in both autonomous and student- operated modes. VEX U teams are allowed more customization and greater flexibility than other grade levels in designing and building their competitive robots.

“The VEX group has been able to accomplish a great deal in just over a year in existence. They have qualified for the world championship tournament in both attempts and competed well against over 100 teams from around the globe, with an 11th in 2017 and 12th in 2018. Their performance is a testament to their teamwork and determination,” says team advisor Aaron Lalley, Ph.D., instructor in the SD Mines Mechanical Engineering Department.

The SD Mines team is made up of students from various disciplines on campus. To learn more about robotics teams at SD Mines, click here.
