Active Duty Military Personnel to Receive Tuition Break at SD Mines

RAPID CITY, SD (Feb. 13, 2019) — Active duty military personnel and reserves on active duty status are eligible for a new reduced tuition program at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Recently approved by the Board of Regents, the new undergraduate rate is no higher than the federal tuition reimbursement rate for military. The current rate of $250 per credit hour and elimination of fees is set to begin this summer. The reduced rate can total $130 dollars in savings per credit hour at SD Mines.

”I am very excited for the new tuition and fee rate for our active duty military,” says Derek Flom, Veterans Resource Center coordinator at SD Mines. “I believe eliminating the fees that tuition assistance didn’t cover will greatly increase the opportunity for active duty members, especially our airmen at Ellsworth Air Force Base, who want to seek a degree from SD Mines.  As a retired Air Force member who used tuition assistance myself, I know how important this is and I’m grateful for the continuous commitment that SD Mines leadership has shown our military members by working so hard to get this approved."

SD Mines currently has more than 120 students who are active duty military or veterans. Military Times ranks the university among the best schools in the nation for veteran and military students. The 2019 Military Times Best list recognizes educational institutions for a commitment to providing quality educational opportunities to America's veterans and military-connected students. Mines ranks 39th out of about 500 colleges that took part in the ninth annual survey, which is the most comprehensive school-by-school assessment of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement.

Mines also has a 100 percent job placement rate among its veteran graduates with an average starting salary of more than $61,300.
