Travis Kowalski, Ph.D., the new
interim head of the Department of Mathematics at SD Mines.
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology
has named mathematics and computer science professor Travis Kowalski, Ph.D., the
new interim head of the Department of Mathematics.
The University recently announced that in the fall of 2019,
it is
reorganizing existing departments – the Department of Mathematics
and Computer Science will become the Department of Mathematics. Dr. Kowalski
will be instrumental in guiding the transition through the
reorganization.
Dr. Kowalski takes over from current
department head Kyle Riley, Ph.D., who is stepping down from the position but
will continue to teach at SD Mines.
“Dr.
Kowalski is an excellent choice to take up the reins of this important
department,” says SD Mines Provost and Vice President for Academic
Affairs, Demitris Kouris, Ph.D. “He has taught at Mines since 2004
and developed a reputation as a talented teacher and leader. We are
grateful for Dr. Riley’s distinguished service as department
head and for his decision to remain at Mines as a tenured associate professor.
Our math department is in good hands.”
The official change will take place
on December 22, 2018, when Dr. Kowalski assumes the office of department head.
“I’m excited for this new challenge,” says Kowalski. “We have a strong math
program here at Mines, and I look forward to leading the program into the
future.”
